God doesn't bust down doors

Posted on: June 30, 2008 by Martha Petteys Related Categories: scattered thoughts

The Holy Ghost is a free gift.

It is God’s good pleasure to pour it out.

So, why don’t some people get it when they ask?

This question has bothered me for some time. We’ve all see it happen, maybe experienced it ourselves. Someone will go to the altar, lift their hands, repent of their sins and ask God to fill them.

Then ... nothing.

Why God? Why didn’t you pour out your spirit? It’s free, and they’re asking for it.

God showed me something in prayer that I’d like to share with you.

Pastor spoke last week on Matthew 12:44. "Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out, and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished."

The repented heart is that swept-up home. The act of repenting set the house in order. BUT, the Holy Ghost also can’t come in till we open the door.

Fear, doubt, a lack of trust – these are all shut doors.

God is a gentlemen. He won’t go where He is not invited. And, He won’t break down doors.

Instead, He will gently knock.

"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." Rev. 3:20

A repented person can stand and lift their hands, but if they won’t (or don’t know how) to open the door, God can’t come in. They could be saying on our lips, "Lord, fill me!" but deep in their heart, they are thinking, "I can’t trust Him," "I don’t believe." Something deep in them is keeping that door closed.

I want to pray that God will show me doors. I want my prayer to be not just fervent – but directed.

We can not pry open doors, but we can pray them open. We can help that hungry soul seeking God to see what it is that is stopping them from receiving His free gift.
